Stuart Binny is an Indian former professional cricketer who had represented his country in all 3 formats of the sport (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is), as an all-rounder, between 2014 and 2016. In the Indian domestic circuit, he had mostly played for his home state of Karnataka (2003-04–2018-19) and later for Nagaland (2019-20–2021) across all 3 formats. A valuable all-rounder who could score runs at a brisk pace in the middle order, he had turned out for Mumbai Indians (2010), Rajasthan Royals (2011–2015, 2018–2019), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2016-2017) in the IPL (Indian Premier League). He had announced his retirement from all formats of cricket in August 2021.

  • Stuart’s father, Roger, was the first Anglo-Indian to represent India in cricket at the international level. He was also his cricket coach while he was studying at St. Joseph’s Indian High School PU College.
  • Roger was a member of the national selection committee in the early and mid-2010s, a phase where Stuart’s cricket on the domestic scene was flourishing and he was regularly in contention for a place in the Indian senior national team across all formats. During such selection meetings, Roger used to leave the room whenever Stuart’s name came up for discussion to avoid allegations of ‘conflict of interest’.
  • In June 2014, he had etched his name in the history books by recording a sensational bowling spell in an ODI match against Bangladesh. He had picked up 6 wickets in 4.4 overs conceding just 4 runs to help India successfully defend a paltry total of 105 runs by bundling out Bangladesh for just 58 runs. As of August 2021, this was the best bowling performance by an Indian cricketer in an ODI match.
  • Stuart had emulated his father by getting selected in India’s squad for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. Their fates turned out to be quite dissimilar though. While Roger was the leading wicket-taker in the 1983 edition of the tournament (18 wickets in 8 games), Stuart did not get into the ‘Playing XI’ in any of the matches in 2015.
