Dandenong North: Mans body found at Melbourne school

A man’s body has been found on the grounds of a Melbourne school just before the start of the school day.

The horrifying discovery was made at Lyndale Secondary College in Dandenong North, in the city’s southeast, just before 7am on Monday.

A staff member reportedly arrived to open the school for the day and found the man’s body inside the greenhouse, located near the school’s main building and called triple-0.

Detective Inspector Dean Thomas told reporters on Monday the man’s death is being treated as suspicious and the homicide squad has taken charge of the investigation due to the nature of the man’s injuries.

The man has not been formally identified but police believe he is aged in his 20s or 30s and is of African descent.

The school is currently preparing for one of the biggest events on its calendar, with year 12 students preparing to start their first VCE exams on Tuesday.

Detectives are hoping to speak to anyone who may have seen suspicious behavior in the vicinity of the school over the weekend.

“I’m appealing to anybody in the community who may have been in the area of this school any time from Friday evening from about 7.30pm through to 7am on Monday,” Detective Thomas said.

Forensic detectives were spotted in aerial footage searching outside the school’s gym and over the lawns.

A police tent is covering a spot of the lawn near the rear corner backing onto residential buildings.

Investigations are ongoing into the exact cause of the death.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said the school would be operating as usual.

“Classes are continuing as usual at Lyndale SC, and full support is available to any students and staff affected by this incident,” they said.
